 Microfluidic devices for molecular detection have been extensively pursued due to many well-documented advantages such as rapid analyses, less consumption of samples and reagents, and potential for massive parallelization. However, efficient world-to-chip interfacing, sample preparation, and low-abundance analyte concentration remain challenging, especially for non-nucleotide targets. At the Physicochemical Hydrodynamics Lab, we design novel bio-agent purification systems based on electrokinetic phenomena (e.g., ion concentration polarization (ICP)) to i) predict preconcentration conditions, ii) escape conventional glass-polymer microfluidic platforms, and iii) increase the preconcentration throughputs.
